Minimum coverage car insurance quotes for 18-year-old drivers are twice as high as 30-year-old drivers, on average.

Age is a major factor when comparing car insurance rates. Younger drivers pay more for auto insurance than older drivers. That's because insurance companies consider them more likely to get into an accident.

Find Cheap Auto Insurance Quotes in Your Area

Currently insured?
It's free, simple and secure.

Insurance companies use a calculation — called a credit-based insurance score — to rate customers. Your score doesn't affect your driving. But companies believe people with lower credit scores are more likely to file claims.

State Farm has the biggest rate increase for drivers with poor credit. Drivers with poor credit pay two and half times the rate for drivers with good credit. On the other hand, Nationwide has the smallest upcharge. It only increases rates by 44% for drivers with a poor credit history.

Some states have outlawed the use of credit scores to decide your car insurance rates, including California and Michigan. In these states, your credit score won't affect your car insurance quotes.

How to compare car insurance quotes

Before comparing quotes, decide how much coverage you need, and get ready for a few questions about your car and driving history.

step one

Gather your personal info

Online car insurance quote tools and insurance agents can provide you with estimates. But the quotes you get will only be as accurate as the information you provide. To compare quotes online, have some basic personal info ready.

Your information:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Address
  • Driver's license number
  • Info about other drivers on the policy
  • Current insurance company

Your vehicle:

  • Year, make and model
  • Vehicle information number (VIN)
  • Date of purchase
  • Mileage

Your driving history:

  • Ticket and accident history
  • License suspensions
step two

Decide how much coverage you need

The amount of car insurance coverage you choose has a big impact on your quotes. Most states require drivers to have a minimum amount of coverage. However, we recommend a full coverage policy for most drivers.

It can be helpful to start with the current coverage you have, which you can find online or on your current policy declaration page.

Types of car insurance coverage

  • Bodily injury liability
  • Property damage liability
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM)
  • Personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments
  • Collision and comprehensive insurance

Most insurance companies also let you add coverage options for a few bucks a month, like emergency roadside assistance or rental car reimbursement. But you often need to have full coverage first.

When comparing car insurance rates, select the same coverage limits from each company for an apples-to-apples comparison.

In the cases of collision and comprehensive insurance — which don't have limits — make sure you select the same deductibles.

step three

Collect and compare car insurance quotes

Visit insurance company websites and use their online quote tools to compare quotes from different companies. Start by getting quotes from the cheapest car insurance companies or the best companies near you.

Car insurance prices change over time. When collecting quotes, save the reference number so you can get back to the quote later. Also, quotes may expire after a few weeks. If you find a good price, don't wait too long to buy coverage.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best car insurance company right now?

State Farm is the best car insurance company for most drivers. State Farm has affordable rates and reliable customer service, and it's available in most areas. However, it's important to compare multiple quotes to make sure you're getting the best rate for you.

Why should I compare auto insurance quotes online?

Every driver gets a different rate for insurance based on their address, car and driving history. You will also find a different quote from each insurance company. The only way to find the best price for you is to get multiple quotes from different companies. This only takes a few minutes when you use an online quote tool.

When should I compare car insurance?

You should compare insurance every year to make sure you're always getting the best rate. At the very least, you should shop for quotes any time something in your life changes that could affect your rates. This includes buying a new car, moving, changing drivers on your policy, getting a ticket or being involved in an accident.

Which type of car insurance is cheapest?

Minimum coverage insurance is the cheapest policy you can buy. The average cost of minimum coverage insurance is $58 per month across the country. However, minimum coverage insurance only provides enough protection to legally drive in your state. This isn't enough coverage to protect most drivers from a high repair bill.

What do I need to compare insurance quotes?

To compare car insurance rates, you'll need your address, your car's make and model, and info about any recent tickets or accidents. Rarely, you might need your driver's license number and VIN for the most accurate quote. It can be helpful to have a copy of your current insurance declaration page handy, to make sure your quotes have the same amount of coverage you have now.

How much should I be paying for car insurance?

On average, drivers pay $58 per month for minimum coverage insurance and $148 per month for full coverage insurance. However, rates vary based on where you liveabout car insurance by state, your driving record and your age.

Is insurance cheaper once you are 25?

Car insurance rates tend to go down as you get older. A 25-year-old driver can expect to pay about 33% less for minimum coverage car insurance than a 21-year-old.

Methodology

We gathered rates across 50 states and Washington, D.C., for 37 insurance companies in all ZIP codes in each state. We only included insurance companies that are available in at least five states.

Rates are for a 30-year-old man with good credit and a clean driving record. He drives a 2015 Honda Civic EX, unless otherwise noted.

Rates for minimum coverage are based on the average cost of a policy that meets state minimum auto insurance requirements. Full coverage auto insurance quotes include collision and comprehensive plus liability coverage:

Coverage
Limit
Bodily injury liability$50,000 per person; $100,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000 per accident
Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury$50,000 per person; $100,000 per accident
Comprehensive and collision$500 deductible
Personal injury protectionMinimum when required by state

Rates for young drivers ages 18 through 25 include quotes from nine of the most populated states in the country. All other rates by age were collected from four of the largest states.

Accident quotes are based on an at-fault accident causing $2,000 in property damage. ValuePenguin's analysis used insurance rate data from Quadrant Information Services. These rates were publicly sourced from insurer filings and should be used for comparative purposes only. Your own quotes may be different.

Minimum auto insurance limits required in Colorado

Colorado drivers are required to carry liability insurance, which helps pay for others' injuries or property damage if you're responsible for a crash.

The minimum coverage levels you must buy in Colorado are:

  • $25,000 bodily injury liability per person.

  • $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident.

  • $15,000 property damage liability per accident.

Liability car insurance covers the cost of any damage, injuries or deaths you cause in a car accident, up to your policy’s predefined limits.

But it’s often best to buy more than the bare minimum to avoid being left vulnerable to lawsuits or major accident bills. You also want to consider other coverage types such as collision and comprehensive, which pay for damage to or theft of your own car.

METHODOLOGY

For our “good driver” profile, NerdWallet averaged insurance estimates for single male and female drivers with good credit and no tickets or violations. The analysis included 5-10 of the largest insurance companies in each state; smaller insurers were also included when rates were available. Liberty Mutual and its subsidiaries were excluded from our analysis as rates were not available.

For full coverage policies, we used the following coverage limits:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person.

  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident.

  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident.

  • $100,000 uninsured motorist coverage per person.

  • $300,000 uninsured motorist coverage per accident.

  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible.

  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible.

In states where required, minimum additional coverages were added. Some policies include additional coverages at the insurer’s discretion.

We used a 2020 Toyota Camry L for all drivers and assumed 12,000 annual miles driven.

We analyzed rates for drivers 20 to 70 years old in ten-year increments. For the average cost of full and minimum coverage in each state, we looked at 35-year-old drivers.

We used the same assumptions for all other driver profiles, with the following exceptions:

  • For drivers with minimum coverage, we adjusted the numbers above to reflect the minimum required coverage by law in the state.

How we chose the cheapest companies in Colorado

NerdWallet’s editorial team analyzed car insurance rates from 19 auto insurers in Colorado and listed the five cheapest options for drivers in several age brackets and with different histories, all driving a 2020 Toyota Camry L. For minimum coverage, we looked at rates that reflect the minimum requirements in Colorado. For full coverage, we used the below coverage limits:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person.

  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident.

  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident.

  • $100,000 uninsured motorist coverage per person.

  • $300,000 uninsured motorist coverage per accident.

  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible.
